tissues form a rational basis for the development of new cancer chemotherapeutic agents. These differences have been primarily uncovered and studied in rodent tumors and it seems essential to validate or invalidate the extra polation from rodent to human tumors by similar studies in human tumors (16). Ever since Warburg (18) reported the observation of a high rate of aerobic glycolysis in most malignant tissues, interest in the study of the enzymes of the glycolytic pathway in tumors has persisted. Although numerous studies on glycolytic enzymes have been reported for rodent tissues, only sporadic studies of a few of these en zymes have been reported for human tissues. An exten sive literature exists on such studies on body fluids. Re cently, Schmidt et al. (15) reported detailed data for these enzymes in human tissues but relatively few for malignant tissues. Methods of measurements and activity patterns of the glycolytic and some related enzymes for several

Enzyme Patterns in Human Tissues. I. Methods for the Determination of Glycolytic Enzymes.

The prospective aim of these studies is the development of consonant procedures for the determination of comparative enzyme patterns in human malignant and nonmalignant tissues. Based on the well established principle of using nicotinamide adenine dinucleotides to follow reaction rates, improved methods and a unified pro gram for the determination of all the glycolytic and some related enzymes ...

APPLICATION OF TWO-DIMENSIONAL ELECTROPHORESIS AND NIH 3T3 CELL TRANSFECTION ASSAY IN THE STUDY OF TUMOR-AS SOCIATED PROTEINS AND GENOMIC DNA TUMOROGENICITY IN MALIGNANT HUMAN ESOPHAGEAL SPECIMENS

Total protein and DNA extracted from histologically diagnosed normal nonmalignant and esophageal tumor tissues were used for analysis of polypeptides pattern by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and DNA transforming activity in NIH 3T3 cell transfection assay, respectively. In comparison to normal tissues, eight polypeptides underwent down-regulation or disappeared, while seven polypeptid...

Absence of Human Papillomavirus in Benign and Malignant Breast Tissue

Background & Objective: Malignant breast tumors, which are one of the most important deadly cancers in women, like many other cancers, are proposed to be related to viruses etiologically. Proper management of breast carcinoma necessitates an identification of the etiological factors. Human Papillomavirus is considered to have an etiological role in breast carcinoma. We...

Carcinoma-related alterations of glycosyltransferases in human tissues.

The glycosyltransferases responsible for catalyzing additions of A, B, and H sugars to cellular acceptors were studied in 23 cases of primary carcinoma. The carcinomas were derived from mouth, tongue, larynx, lung, cervix, esophagus, stomach, and colon. Comparisons of A, B, and H enzymes were made between mucosal extracts from tumor and from normal adjacent tissue and, in the case of gastrointe...

Aberrant expressions of HOX genes in colorectal and hepatocellular carcinomas.

HOX genes are known as master regulator genes which give cells positional information in embryogenesis. In this study, we compared the expression patterns of 39 HOX genes among human colorectal carcinomas from the right large intestine (cecum, ascending and transverse colon), those from the left large intestine (discending and sigmoid colon, and rectum) and hepatocellular carcinoma. The express...
